  • The Helpfile freezes / crashes when performing a search, or using the index.


  • Performing a search from the "Search" tab freezes the help file when the help file is launched from within HelpMaster.


  • Try the following:

  1. Open Windows Explorer and navigate to 'C:\Users\[username]\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\HTML Help\'


  2. Delete the hh.dat file. This file sometimes gets corrupt and causes the Helpfile to freeze/crash. This file is automatically generated by the Microsoft help system to store session data such as last topic, window dimensions, etc. It will automatically be re-created the next time you open the help system.

  3. Clear your Internet Explorer temporary files folder/cache. Open IE and navigate to the "Internet Options (settings icon) > General (tab) > Browsing history (section)" and click thew "Delete" button and then "Delete" again.


  4. If the above fails to resolve the issue then please open the HelpMaster help file from the Windows start menu, "Start (Windows icon) > All Programs (menu folder) > HelpMaster xx.xx.xx (menu folder) > HelpMaster Help File (shortcut)".
